The Youth Leadership Kearney Class 30 began their City Government day at the Younes Conference Center on May 1, 2024. There, they had the privilege of speaking to Dr. Chris Loofe with Kearney High School, Trevor Lee from Economic Development Council of Buffalo County, Sarah Focke from Kearney Visitors Bureau, and Shealee Clausen from Kearney Regional Medical Center. They discussed a few of the Pillars of Kearney (Education, Economic Development, Tourism, and Health Care) and learned about their impact they have in our
community.
The class traveled to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department Headquarters in Downtown Kearney where they learned about many of the volunteers that help our community. The Fire Administrator, Jason Whalen, gave a tour of the facility and explained the various fire trucks and all of the necessities needed to put a fire out.
The class then traveled to Kearney City Hall to speak with Brenda Jensen, the City of Kearney Manager. They learned about what goes into being a Council Member of Kearney. They also got to experience what it would be like to attend a City Council meeting through a Mock Council meeting, with a mayor and council members working through an agenda.
They ended their day at the Police Station. The officers and dispatch workers explained what goes on in the station and why they chose their career. They got to tour the building and saw the K-9’s, SWAT truck, and even got the chance to participate in a simulated live standoff.

Following a tour of the Buffalo County 911 center, the officers and dispatch workers explained what goes on in the station and why they chose their career. The class toured the crime lab and witnessed a demonstration by the K9 unit. They got to tour the building and got to sit inside of the SWAT truck and even got the chance to participate in a simulated live standoff.
