LEADERSHIP KEARNEY CLASS #34 FEBRUARY SESSION

Leadership Kearney Class #34 spent February 11, 2026 diving into Art, Culture & Recreation Day, gaining a deeper appreciation for the organizations that bring energy, creativity, and opportunity to Kearney.

We began at The World Theatre with breakfast sponsored by Buffalo Roofing. Executive Director Mark Treadway shared the history of the theatre, including renovations completed during COVID and the overwhelming community support through university groups, businesses and organizations, and individuals that make its continued success possible.

During the arts panel, Corey Urbanek of Crane River Theater, Denise Christensen of Merryman Performing Arts Center, and Brette Ensz of Kearney Community Theatre spoke about the economic impact of the arts, funding challenges, and the importance of partnerships with Kearney Public Schools. Their conversation highlighted not only the realities of sustaining the arts, but also the passion behind the work and the belief that creativity plays a vital role in shaping future generations.

At the Museum of Nebraska Art, Karissa Johnson offered a behind-the-scenes look at how exhibits are curated and installed. Learning how collections are formed and how Nebraska artists are thoughtfully showcased gave us a new perspective on the detail and care behind every gallery experience.

The Kearney Area Children’s Museum tour, led by Janell Brown, introduced new programming such as the Future Leaders of Fun Kids Council, empowering youth to help shape exhibits and future improvements. The excitement around upcoming growth and remodeling plans reflected a strong commitment to serving families for years to come.

Lunch, sponsored by Ryan Ohri Realtor – American Real Estate & Associates and FNBO, was held at the Kearney Family YMCA. Courtney Burbach shared updates on membership options, after-school programming, and impactful Healthy Living initiatives including: LiveStrong, Brain, Body, and Beyond, and Rock Steady Boxing. The Strong Families Scholarship Campaign further demonstrated the YMCA’s dedication to ensuring accessibility for all.

At Trails & Rails Museum, Andie Trembley welcomed the class before Dr. Lina Cordia shared the importance of preserving Buffalo County artifacts and stories. Protecting local history ensures that future generations remain connected to where we have come from.

The day continued at the Kearney Partners Building, home to the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo County Economic Development, and the Kearney Visitors Bureau. Heather Ullman emphasized the inclusive nature of the Welcome Center and how its interstate location provides visibility and opportunity for businesses and visitors alike.

We concluded at the SportsPlex with Lauren Brandt, who highlighted the facility’s amenities and the sense of community it has created. Providing a shared space for local teams while attracting regional events has strengthened both recreation and regional accessibility for western Nebraska.

With downtown Kearney recently named an official Nebraska Creative District, this session felt especially meaningful. After hearing from so many leaders and touring these spaces, it was clear how much collaboration and creativity continue to shape our community.
