April 30, 2025, was YLK’s City Government Day. The day was packed with hands-on experiences, eye-opening conversations, and valuable lessons in leadership and civic responsibility. Our first stop was CHI Health Good Samaritan, where we spoke with influential people in our city in small groups. We asked them questions about how the city functioned with their special area of expertise, how some systems need each other, and what benefits we have as Kearney natives. Next, we visited the Kearney Fire Department, where we learned about the station’s history, how much time is spent at the station, how much time is given by volunteers to keep us safe, and what the job entails. We also got a tour of the station, with the key points being the equipment and the vehicles used. From there, we made our way to City Hall, where we had the chance to meet with city officials and get a glimpse into the decision-making process that affects everything from local parks to public safety. We sat in the council chambers, discussed civic engagement, and learned how policies are shaped to serve the community. We ran a mock city council meeting as well to get a real-life glimpse into what a meeting entails. Seeing leadership at the city level reminded us that effective leaders listen, collaborate, and think long-term. Our final stop of the day was the Kearney Police Department, where officers gave us a tour of their facility and explained the role of law enforcement in maintaining order and trust. They showed us some of their very neat equipment and some of their vehicles they use when they are called to duty. Arguably, one of the best parts of the day was the K-9 demonstration, where we got to witness a K-9 unit in action, sniffing out drug odors and demonstrating a live bite. Throughout the day, one theme became clear: leadership comes in many forms, but it always involves service, responsibility, and the courage to make a difference. Whether in healthcare, emergency services, government, or law enforcement, the people we met exemplified the kind of leadership that inspires others to do their best and give back.
